The Quiz League of London is a quiz league made up of quiz teams. The structure is similar to sports leagues where each team plays the other teams in their division on a home and away basis. We also have a cup competition. Although many quiz league participants will also take part in pub quizzes, the pub quiz and the quiz league quiz (that also normally takes place in a pub) are different.
Matches take place on a Tuesday, where two teams of four players take part in a 64 question quiz. Each player is asked a question in turn over eight rounds. When answering, a player can answer his/her own question for two points or pass to his/her team for one point. An incorrect answer results in the question being offered to the opposing team for one point.
The majority of the league season consists of the league matches, and we have cup, plate and individual competitions. In the cup and plate we use a handicap system where teams are given starting scores to even things out and hopefully make for closer, exciting matches.
Different quiz leagues use different formats that often include conferring. In The Quiz League of London, (as with Merseyside Quiz Leagues) players use hand signals to indicate confidence of an answer. The team captain decides who is to answer if the player passes to his/her team or the question comes over from the opposition.
Spectators are welcome, and (providing it's not mathematically impossible) newcomers will typically be offered the chance to take part in a friendly match. Attending events that include friendly matches (New Season Social, National Team Quiz Festival, Garden Party) is also a good way to get used to the format, and new teams for the league are always welcome.
