The Quiz League of London is a quiz league made up of quiz teams. Each team plays the other teams in their division on a home and away basis. This structure is similar to sports leagues, and although many quiz league participants will also take part in pub quizzes, the pub quiz and the quiz league quiz (that somewhat confusingly normally takes place in a pub) are different.
In a league quiz, two teams of four players take part in a 64 question quiz. Each player is asked a question in turn over eight rounds. When answering, a player can answer his/her own question for two points or pass to his/her team for one point. An incorrect answer results in the question being offered to the opposing team for one point.
The majority of the league season consists of the league matches, and at the end we have cup, plate and individual competitions. In the cup and plate we use a handicap system where teams are given starting scores to even things out and hopefully make closer, more exciting matches.
Different quiz leagues use different formats that often include conferring. In The Quiz League of London, (as with Merseyside Quiz Leagues) hand signals are used to indicate confidence of an answer. The team captain decides who is to answer if the player passes to his/her team or the question comes across from the opposition.
Spectators are welcome at any match, and (providing it's not mathematically impossible) newcomers will typically be offered the chance to take part in a friendly. Attending events that include friendly matches (New Season Social, National Team Quiz Festival, Garden Party) is also a good way to get used to the format, and new teams for the league are always welcome.
