People take part in quiz leagues for a variety of reasons. It's an enjoyable social activity that exercises the mind without stretching the bank balance. The friendship and comradery of taking part in organised matches often exceeds that of pub quizzes, and it is a pastime often participated in by people who take part in television and radio quizzes to sharpen their edge.
If you've never played the format before, it's well worth trying to get a game or two so that potential team-mates can see the kind of subject areas where you might be able to contribute. Although the matches typically take place in pubs, they are a bit different to pub quizzes. New teams are also welcome to challenge existing teams at social events or, by arrangement. To get started, we have a joining in form.
Not really. The questions and answers in the quiz are all spoken, and matches take place between two teams on a home and away basis (like in football) as part of a league structure. Each team has four players, though squads normally number at least six, and matches typically take place in a pub.
By comparison with questions seen in pub quizzes and other quiz leagues, the standard in terms of question difficulty is often seen as pretty high. It is, however, not necessary for every player to know everything as it is a team game and the responsibility for answering can be passed. People sometimes think they might not be old enough to have the necessary knowledge, but many experienced quizzers would much prefer to have started at a younger age and there are several players under the age of 30 playing in the league.
The league operates a divisional structure with teams of four players playing other teams at home and away, normally in pubs. At the end of the season, there is a cup competition and we also run the Brain of London individual contest. Matches consist of 64 questions, and we play a friendly (or three) in the same format after the main event.
The season lasts from September to about April. Matches start at about 20:30 on Tuesdays, with the evening generally finished by about 22:00. There is a break over the Christmas and New Year period and a couple of social quiz events on weekends in the summer.
People have been known to travel not inconsiderable distances to take part in Quiz League of London matches, this includes locations as far away as Winchester and Leeds! There are many leagues throughout the country, and we are happy to put you in touch with a more local league should you require it.
