Results 2003-2004 League Week 17

A week may be a long time in politics, but it certainly seems to be in quizzing. Last week Animals were trounced by Atletico and were looking doomed to relegation, but this week they met League leaders Crown & Anchor and won comfortably. This means that Allsorts, who saw off the challenge from Rising Sons without too much difficulty, must now be favourites to retain the title. Defeat for a three man Waterloo Sunset by Chester Army means that Waterloo Sunset are now relegated, but the other relegation spot is still open. In the other key relegation struggle Broken Hearts defeated Bread & Roses, so either of these two, or Animals, could yet go down. Bread & Roses will be hoping to make the most of their games in hand, while Broken Hearts must win their last game of the season, away to Atletico, to stay up. In the Division's other game, Telstars, perhaps the most unpredictable team in the League, had a narrow win over Atletico, and are now safe for another season. In the past few weeks they have beaten or drawn with the top three teams, but lost to a 2-man Bread & Roses. No matter how results go next week Atletico will finish in third place. Three joint top scorers for the week, all with 18 points: Fred Filby (Chester Army), David Stainer (Broken Hearts) and Paul Steeples (Animals), the first time this season that the best score of the night has been below 20.

In Division II Barbican completed their schedule with another win, over Uncosy, and are confirmed as Division II Champions. Hogshead Chestnuts could have taken the other promotion slot, but could only draw against TROGs, for whom Andy Frost, with 17 points, had the best score in the Division. Chestnuts need a point from their last game, away to Uncosy, to guarantee promotion. Meanwhile, in the clash between the two teams at the bottom of the League, youth triumphed over experience, as Snail, in the final game of their first League season, beat Jay H Seedy, to leave Jay H Seedy holding the wooden spoon.
