Oxford and Sussex rise to the occasion

The eighth round of the President's Cup confronted the teams with another very challenging question set - fortunes varied widely from team to team and from seat to seat.Interestingly good and bad scores were achieved on 'both sides of the table' which suggests a certain kind of balance.

The closest and highest scoring game was between Sussex and the Mastermind Club. All was level after seven rounds despite the Masterminders suffering the rare, for them, misfortune of a scoreless round (they were among three teams to do so this week). The last round saw Sussex take the spoils with Mastermind able to muster only a single point against their opponents' six.

The other matches were more clear cut. Ian Bayley was the star performer for Oxford, scoring more than half of his team's points as they led from start to finish against Cambridge. And Beds & Herts' title hopes took a (probably) fatal blow in a convincing defeat by a London team showing once again the class which won last year's title but has only been seen in patches in this campaign.

This leaves the league title almost certainly between Oxford and Sussex. The two teams meet this Sunday, 28th February.Oxford, who have not yet lost at home, have the advantage of hosting but will then have a tricky trip to the Mastermind Club in the final match of the season.

Other matches this Sunday see London hosting Cambridge and Beds & Herts at home to Mastermind Club.
