The first winners of the Summer Quiz League are South London thanks to two wins on the last night of the season. Congratulations to them for their somewhat apt result as the Quiz League of London was founded at the South London Quiz League nearly 20 years ago. Commiserations to long-time table toppers West London who lost the brutal epic that was match 2 in what, as expected, turned out to be the crunch game.
The system for breaking ties was changed at the AGM to favour league points without bonus points, before using average points when teams are tied for league points. However, on both the old and new methods, North narrowly pip West for second with wins over Central and Outer at the Old Star. East London - the only team never to have borrowed a player throughout the season collect the wooden spoon.
Top score of the night was 22 by Paul Steeples in match 3. Thanks to Sunil Rao and Mark Grant for setting the quizzes used.
As the season is now concluded, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the people who have helped out with the running the league and setting the quizzes. To the people who have set matches, particular thanks go to Mark Rae who set six, Peter Ediss, Jon Gilbert, Mark Grant, Rob Hannah and Collin Kidd for setting two each, and Richard de Costobadie, Andrew Frazer, Fred Filby, Sunil Rao and Sam Roberts who all set a match. Copious thanks also go to Rob Hannah for his checking of many of the quizzes prior to them being used for matches.
The idea of playing a three team round-robin on each match night was arrived at on a cold day in Oxfordshire when snow was still on the ground as a way to bridge the quiz league-less expanse of summer in the south-east. The Quiz League of London committee subsequently approved the plan and it was enacted.
The initial aim was to provide a large volume of games where all the results count for the league table, and to introduce new players to the format over some enjoyable, social evenings without some of the pressures associated with the main league championship. It was recognised that a lot of people are less available in summer than in the main league season, so never requiring teams to bring more than four players was seen as an advantage. From the beginning, it was clear that a lot of quizzes would be required, and a lot of stockpiling was done in advance to allow for that.
Thanks to everyone who took part. We hope you found it fun. Feedback is always welcome.
